Marcus Fakana, an 18-year-old British tourist, faces a potential 20-year jail sentence in Dubai after being accused of having a relationship with a 17-year-old girl during a family holiday in August. The allegations came to light when the girl's mother discovered messages and photos exchanged between the pair and reported him to authorities.
The girl, also from London, returned to the UK shortly after their encounter, but her mother's actions triggered a legal ordeal for Fakana. He was arrested and detained at Dubai's Al Barsha police station for three days without access to his family or legal support.
According to Detained in Dubai, a human rights organization representing Fakana, the relationship began as a casual romance, with the girl being secretive due to her family's strict rules. Fakana was unaware of the age gap, as the girl was only a few months younger than him. While Dubai recently legalized premarital relations, both individuals must be over 18, making the case more complex under local laws.
Family Struggles and Diplomatic Plea
Stranded in Dubai, Fakana is now living in rented accommodations, with his family struggling to meet the £2,000 monthly expenses. His mother, a cleaner, and father, a warehouse worker, have exhausted their savings to pay for his bail and legal fees. Fakana’s family is appealing to Tottenham MP and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy for intervention.
Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, criticized the mother’s decision to involve law enforcement in a matter that is legal in the UK, saying:
> "This is not something Dubai should be prosecuting. Parents will now think twice before taking their older teenagers on vacation, fearing severe consequences for culturally acceptable behavior in their home countries."
Fakana has expressed hope for a resolution, stating:
> "I’m here all alone. I pray this nightmare will be over, and I’ll be home for Christmas."
This case highlights the importance of understanding local laws and cultural sensitivities when traveling abroad. Efforts to secure Fakana’s release are ongoing as his family and human rights advocates push for diplomatic action.
