The #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest took a dramatic turn last weekend when 42 demonstrators were arrested by the Ghana Police Service. The Democracy Hub-organized event ended in chaos, with confrontations between protesters and police. Videos online showed the intensity of the clashes, highlighting the deep disagreements between the two groups.
Following their arrest, the protesters were arraigned before the Accra Circuit Court 6 and Circuit Court 10. Unfortunately, the court denied them bail, ordering their remand in police custody until October 8 and 11, 2024.
This development raises concerns about the balance between maintaining public order and protecting citizens' rights to peaceful assembly. Similar cases, like the denial of bail to Zimbabwean opposition leader Jameson Timba and 64 supporters , highlight the complexities surrounding protest movements and law enforcement.
