Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has provided insights into the events surrounding the collation of the 2020 presidential election results. According to Nketiah, the withdrawal of NDC agents from the Electoral Commission's Strong Room was not voluntary but was instructed following an agreement with the National Peace Council.
In a video accessible on GhanaWeb, recorded during a recent NDC meeting, Asiedu Nketiah elaborated on a proposed meeting by the Peace Council to address escalating tensions and discrepancies observed during the collation process. The meeting was intended to involve all stakeholders, aiming to ensure that the final election results reflected the will of the people.
However, the NDC was surprised when, upon their agents' departure, the NPP allegedly pressured the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, to declare results in their favor, contrary to the agreed-upon plan.
As a result of these events, Asiedu Nketiah stated that the NDC's decision not to congratulate President Nana Akufo-Addo on his victory stemmed from what he perceives as the Peace Council's role in orchestrating confusion.
The situation escalated to the extent of gunshots being reported at former President Mahama's office, fueled by frustration over perceived deception by the Peace Council.
Asiedu Nketiah also criticized the NPP's legal tactics during the courtroom proceedings, claiming they were designed to divert attention from substantive issues. He highlighted the impact of the Peace Council's actions on the coherence of their case and subsequent legal proceedings.
