Former NPP member Hopeson Adorye has shed light on the shocking resignation of Samuel Dubik Mahama, the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). According to Adorye, Mahama's departure was prompted by intense pressure from the NPP leadership, who made unreasonable financial demands to fund their campaign ahead of the elections.
Mahama was faced with the daunting task of managing debts owed to contractors while also meeting the party's financial expectations. Adorye described these demands as unrealistic, given the ECG's growing financial strain due to unpaid debts. The government's mismanagement had imposed a significant debt burden on the ECG, forcing the company to increase electricity costs to recover monies owed to contractors.
"The government's incompetence is to blame for the increase in tariffs. They created the debt and expected Mahama to clean it up while meeting their unreasonable financial expectations," Adorye stated. Faced with these conflicting pressures, Mahama chose to resign to protect his integrity.
It's worth noting that Mahama had been facing challenges with the board and staff regarding the company's accounting system and management . The ECG has been experiencing difficulties with its prepaid meter billing system, resulting in customers complaining about negative balances.
Following Mahama's resignation, David Boadi Asamoah has been appointed as the acting Managing Director of ECG . Asamoah, previously the Deputy Managing Director in charge of Commercial Services, will assume the role temporarily until a permanent Managing Director is appointed.
The sudden resignation has sparked industry concern, with many expressing worries about the future of ECG, a critical player in Ghana's energy sector .
